As fans of track and field, we often see the great performances but have no clue about the faces behind them. We see the results but don’t see the work that it took to get them there. We praise the athletes and speak on their hard work and sacrifices, but never acknowledge the other half of the equation. DyeStat FL has decided to look at the coaches who help make these athletes great. Below are this week’s nominees in our DyeStat Florida Coach of the Week Poll.

Carmen Jackson Miami Northwestern High School: Anyone who follows track and field in the state of Florida, has no doubt heard of the ladies from Miami Northwestern. Last year at the 3A state meet, the MNW ladies had the meet won before the track finals ever started as their throwers alone ended up scoring more points than any other team. This year, Coach Jackson's team looks to be as dominant as ever. Last weekend they split their squad between Bob Hayes in Jacksonville and George Steinbrenner in Tampa. Being at only half strength in each meet, both squads dominated the competition.

David Halliday Flagler Palm Coast High School: Keeping the pattern of nominating obvious, but deserving nominees, it is hard to ignore David Halliday of Flagler Palm Coast. The former track and field chairman for the FACA had great success with his men’s program as they won the 51st Annual Bob Hayes Classic. Bob Hayes is one of the largest, most competitive meets in the country and is almost always won by teams from South Florida. FPC was able to win with points scored in both sprinting and middle distance events as they won the 4x800, and had 2 of the top 3 finishers in the 800.

Enrico Knowles American High School: If you look at the Florida top lists and US ranks, one particular mark stands out over all the rest. The 3:13.28 run in the boys 4x400 relay at the GMAC Championships is currently the fastest time in the country. Looking back to last year, there were only 5 teams in the country who had run faster than 3:13.28, and one of those teams was American High School. What makes this feat even more impressive? Knowles is able to get kids running this fast without having track facilities!

Joe Sipp Hillsborough High School: Last Saturday Coach Sipp and the boys from Hillsborough high school attended the George Steinbrenner Invitational at USF. The Terrier boys managed to win a very competitive meet by 5 points over runner-up Naples high school. With over 50 teams in attendance, Coach Sipps boys were able to score in a gambit of events. They got valuable point in all 3 jumping events, the 400, the 110m Hurdles and the 4x800.
