Athlete Blogs - Ka'Deem Wynn: Going For The Wynn (Update #5)

Hi everyone! I hope that everyone has enjoyed their 4th of July weekend, and has also had a good week of training.

To recap, last week was my fourth week of cross country training. I logged a total of 50 miles ran for the week, and logged 43.4 on the bike.

It's been a very good week of training. It feels like each workout and long run that I truly feel stronger. However, I need to remember that resting is just as important as all of the training that I'm doing. Earlier this week I found it a bit hard to run the usual Tuesday 10-miler. After running for three years you'd think I'd have gotten the sleep thing down.

But recently, I've found it a bit harder to sleep at night. When I can't sleep at night, I usually go and sleep for three or four hours after practice before I go to work. I feel good when I get up, but then when I come home from work and go to sleep, I can't go to sleep because I slept earlier. So I'm actively searching for ways to improve my sleep patterns because frankly, they suck.

Yesterday was a huge stepping stone for me. My city hosted their annual Celebration 5K for the 4th of July, and I planned on taking a shot at a sub-17 run, since I felt that I was in that kind of shape. I didn't go under 17 minutes, but I ended up winning the race, and I ran 17:10, which is a four second PR. Talk about a great confidence booster.

This morning, I wanted to get in a little something, so I went for a six mile run, very easy and very slow. I didn't go below 8:22 and averaged 8:26 per mile.

This week, I end with a total of 45.81 miles ran, and 33.6 miles on the bike.

I took a look at all of the miles I've biked and ran over the past month, and I've logged 189.6 miles in running, and 173.8 miles on the bike. If that was just one month on the bike, I can't imagine how many miles I've biked from early spring until now, going in between school, work, and practice.

More news, I started filling out prospective athlete questionnaires for various colleges. So far, I've filled out questionnaires to the University of Arkansas, Arkansas State, the University of North Florida, and Baylor University.

I haven't received any calls from any coaches yet, but it's only been about four days since they were able to call rising seniors. I did however get an email from the coach from the University of South Dakota. Other than that, nothing special.

That's it for this week's update. Catch you next week. To all of the fellow runners, keep logging in all of those miles. This is the time to get them in and trust me, they really do help. To my fellow rising seniors, let's keep running hard. It's our last time for everything.

Don't hope for victory. Train for it.
